The mission of the Greater West Town Community Development Project is to build a community-based response to expanding educational and economic opportunities for the disadvantaged residents of the Greater West Town communities. It seeks to develop programs that can serve as practical, model solutions to problems which limit opportunity to neighborhood residents and to link the employment and training of the neighborhood workforce with local economic development efforts and the needs of small and mid-sized employers.
Since 1989, A Child’s Place (ACP) has been working to improve the lives of children and families experiencing homelessness in Charlotte. Beginning as a small group of committed volunteers and growing into a nonprofit serving over 2,000 children and their families from schools across Mecklenburg County, ACP has transformed into a leading organization and is the only nonprofit organization in Charlotte focused specifically on the success of children whose families are experiencing homelessness and generational poverty.
Brighton Cooperative Preschool is a non-profit, non-secretarian organization licensed by the State Department of Social Services and the Michigan Department of Education as a cooperative preschool; a parent cooperative preschool is organized by a group of families with similar philosophies who hire a trained teacher to provide their children with a quality preschool experience. The parents assist the professional teachers in the classroom on a rotating basis and participate in the educational program of all the children.
