As the leaves wither and fall
You teach us a lesson in letting go
With no leaf or flower make up
To hide cuts and bruises, holes and scars
With branches bare and unadorned
You stand tall and proud
To show us how to accept gracefully
As we age and the time fades
As winter creeps in with frigid winds
From wicked storms and freezing ice
You teach us the values of patience and hope
As you await the advent of spring
You stand there mute and immobile
Yet you’re truly a teacher of mankind.
