        • Eating disorders could be really baffling. Let’s dissect it together. There are numerous myths surrounding this illness. One of them is that patients choose to have eating disorders, and they could simply snap out of it. This is not the case. EDs are actually complex psychiatric illnesses that patients simply choose to have. 

         

        The American Psychiatric Association classifies five different types of eating disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th Edition (DSM-5): Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), and Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED).

         

        According to the National Eating Disorder Association, most people with an eating disorder are not underweight. Although most people with eating disorders are portrayed by the media as emaciated, you can’t tell whether someone has an eating disorder just by looking at them. These perceptions can perpetuate the problem and may cause distress in eating disorder sufferers for fear of not being “sick enough” or “good enough” at their disorder to deserve treatment.

         

        Another common myth surrounding EDs is that most of us have Eating disorders nowadays. Well, it is true that our society is keen on weight and food, and disordered eating patterns are common, clinical eating disorders are different from these. 

         

        I believe that every myth and stereotype starts from indifference. Let us help people suffering from Eating Disorders feel accompanied by showing interest in what they are going through!
